Trying
to Concieve
by Amanda Scott
At least 90 million couples worldwide, 11 million in the US alone,
are trying to become pregnant. With only a 20% average chance of
becoming pregnant each cycle, it's no surprise that couples can
easily become discouraged and stressed. In fact, the stress related
to infertility is second only to the stress related to the death
of a loved one!
Although it takes the average fertile couple 5-6
months to conceive, the time to conceive can often be reduced to
less than 3-4 months for fertile couples who know when they are
fertile and who engage in regular and frequent intercourse during
their fertile time.
It is therefore important to find out when you are
most fertile, so you can cut the time to conceive, because the time
to conceive increases significantly as couples get older. Numerous
studies have demonstrated a significant decline in fertility beginning
at about age thirty and progressing rather quickly thereafter.
Charting your fertility signs can be extremely useful
in the diagnosis and resolution of fertility issues, like problems
with ovulation, the #1 fertility issue in women. Approximately 40%
of infertility cases are caused by female factors, 40% are caused
by male factors, and 20% are caused by a combination of both.
Studies suggest that the majority of couples who
are determined to become parents will achieve a successful pregnancy.
Of "infertile" couples, at least 50% of those who complete
an infertility evaluation will respond to treatment with a successful
pregnancy. Some infertility problems respond with higher or lower
success rates. Those who do not seek help with their fertility issues
have a "spontaneous cure rate" of only about 5% after
a year of infertility. There are very few couples in whom infertility
is absolute - with exceptions being complete absence of sperm (azoospermia),
total tubal occlusion and ovarian failure.
For many couples the heartbreaking experience of
infertility is the first life crisis that they must face together.
The realization that there might be a fertility problem often comes
as a shock because we are rarely educated that one out of ten couples
have difficulties becoming pregnant. The resources and information
